Step 5: Track Progress

  • Review the impact of the plan. As the work unfolds, staff (and hopefully children and parents) will no doubt gain satisfaction and pride as they begin to 'see and feel' the difference in everyday ways.

  • Set out a process for systematically documenting early milestones, and tangible evidence of change being experienced on the ground. Start by identifying some everyday behavioural indicators where a change in frequency would reflect improvement in the skills your program focused on building: If possible, tap into data that you already collect as part of your normal administrative record keeping. For example, if you are implementing a program focused on developing self-regulation skills, some early evidence of change might be indicated by: a drop in the number of playground fights reported; reduced numbers of suspensions being issued; teachers noticing changes in classroom dynamics such as less disruptive behaviour, more calm, respectful and cooperative behaviour, more smiles and fewer tears!

  • In addition to recording some of the organic indicators of change, be sure to scan the results of Rumble's Quest the next time you run it for evidence of change in areas that relate to the issues you sought to address in your action plan. That is, use next year's Rumble's Quest data to evaluate the plan and chart your ongoing story of growth and learning.

Summary

  • Use your Rumble's Quest data to identify the underlying needs and wellbeing issues experienced by the children in your care

  • Reflect on the conditions that influence this (draw on knowledge of local context and the insights and perspectives that may be provided by staff, parents and the children themselves)

  • Articulate in a clear and concrete way, the goals and objectives of any action you want to take to address the issues you've prioritised

  • Investigate what evidence-based strategies and best practice activities you might use to achieve the goals

  • Consider how ready your school or organisation is to implement selected programs and plans

  • Identify and secure the resources required to implement the plan, and what you need to do to prepare your site for action.

  • Decide how you will monitor the effectiveness of the action plan as it is implemented: Specify what success looks like and document evidence of change (short and long term; qualitative and quantitative).

  • As you review progress, think about ways you can keep improving into the future.
